Katutura is one of the black townships created by Apartheid before
Namibia's independence in 1990. Located on the outskirts of the capital
of Windhoek Katutura continues to be undeveloped and poverty stricken.
Unemployment, crime, illiteracy, and disease are continuing factors.
Youth With A Mission (YWAM) surveyed many neighborhoods of Katutura
during its research of the area. After visiting many homes to seek out
the most needy areas the old Damara-Nama location was targeted. In a
five-block area 1000 children were found to be in need. 510 of these
were orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS. The defining
factors of the OVC's were: alcohol and drugs in the home, sickness,
disabled children, and extreme poverty with several people living on one
income in over crowded housing.
After a year and a half of investing in the impoverished neighborhood of
Katutura, Youth With A Mission has made a major impact on the lives of
the children and the families of this neighborhood. The day care centre
run by YWAM is playing a vital role in enhancing the development
potential of pre-school aged children.
COMMUNITY HOPE SCHOOL: In January 2005, Teachers for Africa is
establishing Community Hope School, a Christian school created for the
school age children of YWAM's ministry and other OVCs in Katutura.
Sixteen students will be in the first Kindergarten class. Each year
another grade will be added until the school is K-6. The daily
spiritual, academic and nutritional needs of these children will be met.
This year the Kindergarten class will meet in YWAM's preschool facility
and in 2006 the school will need to purchase or rent another facility.
John and Suzanne Hunter are heading up the project. Three well-trained
Namibians will be the principal, teacher and support staff.
Training classes will be offered to staff that need Namibian teacher
certification.
